In the mobile gaming ecosystem, it’s essential to stay updated with industry standards and regulations. As most of you might be aware, Google’s requirement for TCF (Transparency & Consent Framework) compliance will soon be pivotal for app monetization in the European Economic Area (EEA) and the United Kingdom. Let’s take a look at what that means.

Understanding Google’s New Directive

Google’s announcement on May 16th,  2023 set the industry abuzz with its mandate for app publishers to secure user consent via a Google-certified CMP (Consent Management Platform). The updated deadline is now January 16th, 2024. With Q4 well underway, publishers might face challenges in making timely implementations, given past experiences with ATT, GDPR, and Apple Privacy norms.

CMP Certification: The Current Landscape

Google has given clarity by releasing an official list of their certified CMPs. Notable, while 49 CMPs are endorsed for the web, only 21 cater to mobile apps. The gaming sector, in particular, indicates minimal activity. The lengthy process of certification, first by IAB and then by Google, makes the in-house CMP development a less favored route for publishers.

Transitioning to TCF 2.2: What You Need to Know

The IAB’s latest version, TCF 2.2, initially slated for a September 30, 2023 rollout, has been deferred to November 20, 2023. Presently, industry giants like Supercell, Electronic Arts, and Zynga are still catching up to the basic TCF guidelines.

Choosing Your CMP: Insights from Luna Media

After doing some research into CMP solutions there are a few considerations:

  • Support Availability:  Seamless integration and ongoing support are crucial. A slight glitch can have significant revenue implications.
  • Customization and AB Testing: Personalized consent pop-ups can have a positive effect on opt-in rates.
  • Regulation, TCF Version, and Integration Compliance: Ensuring that the chosen CMP aligns with global regulations, supports the latest TCF version, and offers varied integration options (iOS, Android, Unity) is critical.
  • Server Location & Data Privacy: With the EU emphasizing data transfers, evaluating CMP server locations, preferably within the EU is ideal.
  • Experience, Core Competency, and Additional Features: Look for CMPs that have a proven track record with game publishers, provide data access via API, offer definitive proof of consent, and present competitive pricing models.

Implementing Your Chosen CMP: The Nuances

After selecting a CMP, publishers must deal with decisions on pop-up design, vendor listings, content structuring, sequencing of prompts (especially with iOS ATT), and potential legal interventions.

Why Proper CMP Implementation Matters

For publishers, especially those focusing on casual and hyper-casual games, a well-thought-out CMP implementation is non-negotiable. As Google takes the lead in mandating TCF compliance, it’s anticipated that other major networks might soon follow suit. Proper CMP implementation is pivotal for both the publishers’ revenue and reputation.

Timeline

May 2023 and onward: Google has begun the process of certifying CMPs that work with our publishing partners. Google will work with CMPs to certify them against the certification criteria. Beginning January 16, 2024: Publishers and developers using Google AdSense, Ad Manager, or AdMob will be required to use a Google-certified TCF CMP when serving ads to EEA and UK users.

Technical Tweaks

Beyond mere policy adjustments, TCF 2.2 also encapsulates technical specification changes. The shift from getTCData to the introduction of the GVL version 3 are a few instances. The latter incorporates new data fields detailing different data categories and data retention periods for each purpose. Through these amendments, TCF 2.2 seeks to balance privacy protection with the operational requirements of digital advertising.

The Bottom Line

As Q4 progresses, the allure of short-term profits might make some hesitant to tackle TCF 2.2 compliance. Nonetheless, the potential long-term risks of non-compliance overshadow short-lived gains. The festive season, being a significant revenue contributor mandates caution as any oversight in user consent might not just dent revenues but also mar a publisher’s standing. A proactive stance today ensures a seamless transition into 2024, fortifying user trust and upholding a robust revenue stream.
